Ossipee Public Library to Host Author and Illustrator David McPhail Art Reception

Ossipee, NH — The Ossipee Public Library was awarded a $2,200 Moose Plate Grant from the New Hampshire State Library to professionally preserve and frame an original illustration by acclaimed children’s author and illustrator David McPhail in November of 2025. Since then, the Northeast Document Conservation Center has finished the project.

The artwork, a cherished piece of the library’s collection, has been stabilized and conserved to prevent further deterioration, ensuring it can be enjoyed by future generations. “We are deeply grateful to the New Hampshire State Library and the Moose Plate program for supporting this important project,” said Jenny Spofford, Director of the Ossipee Public Library. “David McPhail’s work has inspired countless young readers, and we are honored to preserve a piece of his artistic legacy here in Ossipee.”

David McPhail, a New England native and award-winning author and illustrator, has created more than 200 children’s books over his long career, including Edward and the Pirates, Mole Music, and Pigs Aplenty, Pigs Galore!. The illustration housed at Ossipee Public Library reflects McPhail’s signature warmth and storytelling charm.

The Moose Plate Grant Program, funded through the sale of New Hampshire Conservation License Plates, supports the preservation of the state’s cultural and historic resources. Administered by the New Hampshire State Library, the program provides competitive grants to libraries, museums, and historical organizations across the state.

The community is invited to join the trustees, friends, and staff for refreshments and a few words from award-winning author and illustrator David McPhail.  They will unveil one of McPhail’s famous illustrated characters Pig Pig on Friday, September 25th at 3:30pm.
